okay technical people - i'm currently unable to send mail. this is the error message i get, and i get it no matter who I try to send mail to, and no matter whether I am trying to send mail from mindspring or my foxfire account. any suggestions?

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'WOMBAT@LISTSERV.AOL.COM'. Subject 'Re: [WOMBAT] my kids' school closure: update', Account: 'mail.mindspring.com', Server: 'mail.foxfirearts.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 <wombat@listserv.aol.com>... i did - but josh just had me enter an actual ip address, and it sent them! so I *think* its fixed. any thoughts on why it may have been broken?

It sounds like your email client is set to send through an SMTP server that doesn't match up with your ISP's. Are you on dialup?

no, we're on a cable modem, and it was set up exactly the way josh's was, and his worked, and mine didn't. Also, it worked up until today.

Looks like whomever runs that SMTP server decided to block port 25 (port for SMTP), or restricted it's use (some ISP's block port 25 from everybody in general who are not logged in to their servers, or from hackers, or if there is an e-mail virus flood in progress).

Josh/you can go to http://www.webattack.com and download a free SMTP server to run on one of his/your computers to get around this problem.

The other thing is that that e-mail address looks like a listserver (mailing list server) address. You usually can't send e-mails to those.

hee. I normally can send email to that listserv address, and it was doing it for regular addresses, as well, so i don't think that was it. but thank you for all of the wonderful advice. (hugs) it's so nice to know that there are people awake. :)

Still up? I just sent you email, and it seems to have gone through from this side. Did you receive it?

And I had a day not long ago when I couldn't send mail to wombat either. But the next day it was working again. Weird. Try again tomorrow and maybe it'll be fine.

yeah - I've been receiving emails fine, but there was a period of about six hours where it wouldn't let me send anything. It drove me a little crazy, but luckily, it's fixed now. :)
