from [livejournal.com profile] anthologie, who, might i add, posts awesome things. :) quotes and thoughtful things, and just all sorts of really good stuff.

Imagine, for a moment, that something very important to you is lost somewhere in your house. You're pretty sure you have it. But you can't, for the life of you, remember where you put it.

Now imagine that you're someone -- and most people do this now and then, if not all the time -- who puts your dirty laundy in a pile on the floor.

It's not shameful or embarrassing to get your clothes and linens dirty. We all do it. Most of us pile it somewhere, and plenty of people go weeks and weeks without washing it. Some people even go buy new clothing when they run out of clean clothes, rather than wash the (now monumental) amount of dirty laundry that has piled up.

But, just the same, dirty laundry happens -- and it piles up. It doesn't do any good to go into denial about it. You have to deal with it sooner or later.

You have choices here. One is to wash your laundry on a regular schedule, like once or twice a week. Another is to wash it all when you run out of clean (or clean-smelling) clothes. Another is to ignore the pile for months and months. There are lots of ways to go.

But one day, you're looking for that important item. It's not in the place you last saw it. It's not in the drawers or on the mantel. Finally, you dig through that pile of dirty laundry, sorting and getting ready to wash it as you go. It takes a lot of work, a lot of lifting and forcing yourself to smell stinky socks and look at stains that might never fully come out. But there, at the very bottom, is the treasure you are looking for.

Now pretend that the important item is a quality you know exists within you -- or wish you had within you. And the dirty laundry is all your fears and mental habits piled on top of it.

There's no shame in fear -- or mental habits. We all have them. And it's a lot of work to dig through the huge pile of them, the pile that seems bigger than we are. But denial doesn't make it happen any faster. You can only find out what's underneath when you deal with the pile.

How else are you going to find that thing?
