at least, that's what i've been led to believe.

it's the little girl look, with victorian-esque clothing. little china doll, if you will. i have some porcelain dolls who have the outfits to a t. if you do a googlenews search of alt.gothic.fashion, you'll find several links.

i could be completely off-base, of course. i'm tired.

From what I understand it's mostly a bad rip off of some j-rock styles. I think that Malice Mizer dressed that way in one photo shoot and it became all the rage...
And a lot of goths are calling the strangest things "Lolita".

Dunno...it's kind of an annoying trend, but it'll die like all the rest very shortly I'm sure...

Personally, I find the Japanese street fashion trend, Elegant Gothic Lolita, to be interesting and much more beautiful than American gothic styles, which have gone steadily downhill since the early 90's. The exhibit, Superflat (http://www.walkerart.org/programs/vaexhibsuperflat.html), is currently in Minneapolis at the Walker and has included books documenting these styles. Fruits (http://www.fujisan.com/online/shopping~s249-3235539-3e~?navi=3207) is the best of these and has been complied by the Vantan Design Institute of Tokyo. Unlike American youth, Japanese young people are expected to conform until their free time. Many young people belong to fashion cliques and hang out in a certain district of Tokyo to be seen. In the specific category of EGL, designers such as Betsey Johnson and Issey Miyake are included in the "fads." The styles are inspired by Victorian children's clothing and accessories sometimes include china dolls for the extreme.
Remember it's a little different there; more like an impromptu fashion show than going to some cool hangout as a counterculture youth.

Around here it is HIGHLY denoted by dolls and lollies......

I guess I'm somewhat into it as I tend to look very childish or very vampy when I go out anyhow... It seems to be a HUGE rage in plus sized goths...
