So I was at the allergists for about two and a half hours - I *really* liked her - liked her more that any doctor since Mariae, who is my nurse practitioner who chats with me while searching out my overies. hee. she's fun.
Lisa Hirsch, is this lady's name - she talked to me, and then they did the weight/height thing, and blood pressure - and then they did the allergy test. around my wings, which was cool. it seemed like they did my whole back - they did the usual round of trees and pollens and then they did foods (about ten of them). The conclusion has become that I'm allergic, drastically so to some (6+++) to most trees and grasses. Which I think is kind of funny - I can thank my mom for that, actually! I made a copy of that sheet, and plan on sending it to her in a thank you card. (laugh) I think she'll find it funny.

I'm also definately allergic to soy, and to chestnut (is that what nutmeg is made out of?). I'm possibly allergic to eggwhite and peanut as well - she had me have blood drawn in the lab, and she's going to call me with those reults, and then I may have to come in and do some kind of test, which I think involves eating those foods in front of her, but I'm not sure. She gave me three or four prescriptions - zyrtec, to take as needed, one for epi-pens (which made me think of [livejournal.com profile] krasota and I opted for excitement instead of fear for them), eyedrops, and a cream for ecsema. (which I'm not using, because I prefer [livejournal.com profile] wiwiff's amaranthe cream.
they started on one side of my back, and it hink they are supposed to leave it on for twenty minutes - the nurse started wiping it off when she finished the other side of my back, because the reactions were so strong. They kept telling me how good i was being, and what a great oatient I was - I keep telling them that the wings they were working around had hurt a lot more than this! they had to redo some foods on me, because they were too close to other stuff, and they weren't sure what kind of reaction they were getting. So, the allergist was actually a whole bunch of fun, believe it or not, and it makes me a much happier person to know that I *am* allergic to soy, although I am still experimenting with foods.

then I came home to a billion things to do - and some of them i was a couple of days late on. (sigh) but - i was together all damn semester - not being together for a couple weeks isn;t really a bad thing.

And we found out that josh's air conditionig doesn't work anymore, in rush hour traffic, in 90 degrees. ick ick ick. So, since my dad is giving me extra money for tax returns, we're getting it fixed, if possible. His horn hasn't worked in a awhile, and a horn is really an essential thing in athens/atlanta - people keep trying to drive him off the road and such, so for both his safety and mental health it needs to happen!

somehow last night i managed to get three out of the four things done for today that I needed to, and the fourth i'm in progress on (yay!) so I now feel much more prepared. i'll probably piss jess off again today by not allowing her to borrow *MY* copy of cabaret. but i don't care so much. hah.

So you ARE allergic to soy, eh? Well, at least now you know... I'm assuming that "(which I'm not using, because I prefer [Bad username in LJ tag]" means that you prefer the creme I made for you. :) If so, YAY! I'm really happy that it's working so well for you.

Sure... Maybe we can work out a good day next week. This weekend will be extremely hectic with Mom in the hospital and March djing Cirqur Noir tomorrow night. But yeah, we'll figure something out. Their eyes are open now, too. March says they're not kitties, they're KISS. All of their faces look like they have black and white make-up on. ;)

Did I ever tell you I learned my numbers from my allergy tests? They did 1-100 on my back. After that they needed to do 1-20 on my arm (or was it the other way around?). Either way, I had the numbers 1-20 on my arm for each stick they did on my arm. It was just in time to be learning my numbers :)

Nutmeg is made from mace.

It must be a relief to know what exactly you are allergic to--at least now you can avoid allergens to the best of your ability.

What kind of cream did they give you for your eczema? I have to use a steroidal cream if mine flares too badly.

Nutmeg is made from mace.
Sorry to butt in, but it's actually the other way around. Mace is made from the outer shell of nutmeg. :)

wow. i just read this (seriously behind in LJ friends and have decided i want to actually attempt to catch up)...

if you need ANY pointers on soy, lemme know.

and just FYI, some folks who are allergic to peanut and soy avoid all legumes. i don't. i don't overdo it, but i don't avoid my beloved lentils, black beans, etc. i just make sure that i don't eat them every meal and when my immune system is being super charged evil psycho bitch, i rotate my diet and only eat beans every couple of days or so. YMMV, but good luck. :)

since i've moved, i have to find a new allergist... that means getting tested all over again (they all like to do their OWN thing)... good thing i don't really mind the insanely itchy bits that swell up all over. it's transient. i can deal.

no soy. eeeeevil soy

soy is such a dadgum fun allergy. when you start thinking it's in EVERYTHING, just relax and thank your stars your not allergic to corn. now THAT is truly ubiquitous.

all the following is off the top of my head.

anyhow, some folks only react to soy protein. some, like me, react to ANYTHING derived from soy. some doctors dispute this, but new research shows we CAN react to things like soy lecithin, because they're not as pure (protein-free) as previously thought.

so... if you react to just soy protein--consider yourself lucky. ;) that just eliminates things like tofu, tempeh, hydrolized vegetable protein (HVP), hydrolized soy protein (HSP), texturized VP (TVP), texturized SP (TSP), miso, soy yogurt, soy milk, soy cheese, soy cream cheese, soy flour, etc.

now, if you react to more, you're gonna have a tougher time:
anything with "soy" in the name.
unclear names, but highly possibly soy:
lecithin, vegetable oil, vegetable fat, vegetable shortening, mono & diglycerides, glycerin (can be made from any fatty vegetable), vegetable starch (usually corn)

vitamin E (often derived from soy): tocopherol, d-alpha tocopherol, etc. dl-alpha-tocopherol is SYNTHETIC.

MSG can be made from soy, but is usually bacteria or corn-derived, IME.

if the name of the ingredient isn't clear, call them manufacturer. they will likely know whether "vegetable fat" is soy or palm, for instance, but won't likely know the source of their mono & diglycerides or MSG, for the simple reason that their suppliers don't specify. and why is that? the suppliers use whatever's on hand during a particular batch and don't always keep track.

you'll find that one of the most annoying things is the truth in labelling that's come about. now, if there's a REMOTE chance of soy contamination, the label might say "could contain soy, peanuts, etc". now, i appreciate this, but the truth is these companies do this solely to cover their arse. another annoying thing--the and/or in ingredients: vegetable oil (corn, soy, and/or cottonseed). this is similar to the reason listed in the previous paragraph--the manufacturer used what was on hand/what was on sale that week. *sigh*

there's a great forum at delphi called no soy. i think the URL is:
http://www.delphiforums.com/start/nosoy, but i could be wrong.

i'm on some great email lists for food allergies. let me know if you ever want the info.

incidentally, my allergists often comment that people with peanut allergies often have very severe grass allergies. ;)

got the URL wrong for the NoSoy forum (http://forums.delphiforums.com/nosoy/start).

NoSoy should open up in a new window now... on the proper page.

delphi has a free service, but they do require registration.

one more soy thing... annatto.
no, annatto isn't soy--it's achiote seed.

annatto is frequently toasted in soy oil. when added to cheese (orange cheese with natural coloring listed), it's frequently dissolved in soybean oil first. ah, well. white cheddar is just as good as yellow.

oh, and taco bell's cheese usually has artificial coloring. the corn (hard shells) tortillas don't contain soy, but the flour tortillas contain lecithin. the beans are safe, the meat is not. the mexican pizza shells are not. the sauces should all be safe. the sour cream at wendy's isn't safe. the only thing safe at mcdonald's is the ice cream and the non-chocolate sauces/shakes.

i don't eat meat, so i usually can't tell you about that. outback's steaks aren't safe unless you have a server you trust who will ensure that it's not oiled or marinated.
