a post from the corsetry community that I haven't looked at yet, but want to save.

Metal corsets
Seeing as this is on topic in H-cost again, thought I might pop these links here as well.

Well debate rages- erm simmers really over the purpose of metal corsets (actually looks to be a mixture of reasons, medical, masque costume, shop signs and victorian fancies at recreating the past)

So I'm going to copy and paste my email to the list as it is driving me bananas trying to rewrite it differently here;)

The old theory that iron corsets (some not all and certainly not all the extant ones floating around (4 off the top of my head. I know there are two online) may have been used for medical reasons has in fact some historical basis!

Valerie Steele (and she is someone who has spent a life time researching corsets and the social history surrounding them) has found some texts written by a doctor recommending the use of metal .. supports for legs body etc etc.

Someone's notes from a lecture of Ms Steeles, and having looked at my own notes after lectures, you must take into account a student doesn't always jot down exactly what is said;)

Besides the two in Corsets and Crinolines (also redrawn or printed elsewhere there are:

(2nd from top)
And another from a fashion show that hopefully is still around.

Why yahoo told me there were not messages in the sca-garb list with "metal corsets" it it I dunno.. I did find it using my name...

redrawing of the last corset on this page.
And the article is crammed full of myths, 13 inch waist for girls indeed!
So I saved the page just in case it ever did disappear.

mention of Norris.. yet more myth telling.

Where do these pople get their facts!? "The iron corset was devised in 1579 and was worn by women for about 10 years. The first modern corset was made in Britain in the 1700s."
