what is a dj to you? what's the one, identifiable thing about all of them? we have one, who works in a bar, and I'm thinking of going out and doing a photo project of downtown athens, but i also thought i would ask those of you who actually are djs. :)

Date: 2002-08-15 06:14 am (UTC)I'm not exactly a professional DJ.. but.. here's my thoughts on it..
To me, it goes above and beyond the ability to push buttons on a CD player, though that does help.
It's knowing the music. Keeping up to date with what's new but not forgetting the old. Catering to your crowd.
Some might say that it's a requirement to keep your dance floor filled, but I've also heard that a good DJ plays what is good, not necessarily what the crowd wants. And that a good DJ is an asshole, but right in the end.
But above all that, it's the love of the music. And I do mean *love*. Not just pushnplay as I've seen a few do. Absolute love.
You can, however, ID a DJ by the headphones. For some, it's an outgoing personality, but not always. :)
