so last year, as a sort of a side thing, we started making what we called firestarters - pine cones in muffin cups with wicks run under them, and wax poured in. we gave them to a couple of people - and they absolutely *loved* them. in fact, they requested more.

so this year, we're giving them as presents. baskets of them. Josh's aunt gathered us a bag (brown paper grocery sack size) of pine cones. and we're going through them. we have 4 baskets to fill, plus a bag for his mom. i've filled three baskets, am working on the fourth (just started) and haven't started working on the one for his mom yet. wow, i say. :)

so this year, i messed up a bit, and in trying to get one set of the pine cones out (too much wax) broke off the tops of them - basically, everything that wasn't embedded in the wax. so we have two of those - and it seems a shame to throw them away. so i took a brush that I didn't care about, and painted them with wax. :) now they're little flowers - so instead of being cast-offs, they're special. :) ha. hopefully, people won't request those next year!

on another note, still haven't heard anything about my car. but i have made candles, broken up wax, showered, got another certification of enrollment sent to my dad for the insurance (which, by the way, i'll have until i'm 26! yay!), and checked the mail. :)

if you run out of wicks, dryer lint works well. we always used to make firestarters with paraffin, dryer lint, some paper shavings (or corrugated cardboard, or pinecones) in ice cream or muffin trays for girl scout camp. it was a fun leader/no-girl activity. ;) (yes, it would've been fun for girls, but i was the leader of daisy/brownie troop in those days and melting paraffin + little girls = scary thoughts.
